Prime minister Manmohan will inaugurate tomorrow the first five of the 111 aircraft being delivered to Air India-Indian. These aircraft will mark the beginning of a new phase in India's aviation boom, said Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel.

Praful Patel termed the opening of Air India's non-stop Mumbai-New York flight as a feather in its cap. The new aircraft which has just arrived from Boeing is being deployed in this route. The first non-stop Mumbai-New York flight is on August 1.

Praful Patel also said that the country has the potential for a thousand airports. The Indian government is pursuing a massive programme of revamping the creaking aviation infrastructure in India, which has not kept pace with the aviation boom.

The government plans to promote regional airlines flying short flights with incentives like zero landing charges and low fuel taxes. These airlines will be using mostly smaller aircraft with seats up to 80.

According to Praful Patel, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Trichy, Guwahati and Nagpur are some of the smaller cities with enormous potential for aviation growth.
