Thai budget airline Nok Air is starting discount flights from Bangalore to Bangkok. This is the first international flight route from Nok Air, which is part-owned by Thai Airways. Nok Air's India flights start from June 1. This was announced by the low-cost airline on Tuesday.

Bangkok being a shopper's paradise, Nok Air has branded itself as a shopper's airline, catering to the tourist-shopper mindset. Nok Air will deploy a 150-seater Boeing 737-400 aircraft in the Bangalore-Bangkok route.

Nok Air is also planning to fly nonstop flights to Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad from Bangkok in the next five to seven months. The airline said it has already secured landing rights for the same.

The flight tickets cost from an initial fare of Rs 9,999 for a round-trip ticket, which includes taxes. The Nok Air flight will take off from Bangalore airport for Bangkok early morning at 03.35 and arrive in Bangkok at 09.10 in the morning. According to Nok Air, this gives passengers ample to time to rest, relax and do all the sight-seeing and shopping till late night in Bangkok.

The whole package includes hotel accommodation, airport transport to Siam paragon and trips to tourist spots around Bangkok. Nok Air has also tied up with the Siam Paragon shopping complex in Bangkok to offer 15% discount for purchases made there. Apart from continental and Thai dishes, travellers from India can also select from an Indian menu. The Siam Paragon in Bangkok is a sprawling 500,000 sq m complex, having a department store with 250 global and local brands, edutainment and exploration centres. Asia's largest aquarium is also houses in the Siam Paragon, besides an entertainment plaza.

According to Nok Airlines CEO Patee Sarasin, the carrier has selected Bangalore for its first overseas flight to Bangkok, a shopper's paradise, "enriched by its cultural sites and adventurous nightlife and popular tourist attractions." According to Patee, even business travellers can combine their official engagements with leisure activities and can visit shopping places or go sight-seeing of their choice.

Nok Air has targeted India for its first overseas flights, attracted by the ever-increasing numbers of Indian air travellers and tourists. The passenger traffic between India and Thailand is growing a rate of 20% to 30% every year.

Nok Air, the Thailand-based budget airline, commands 28% market share in Thailand. Last year, Jetstar Asia, the low-cost subsidiary of Qantas shut down its services to Bangalore. According to Nok Air, this happened because the airline concentrated only on cheap flights, while Nok Air wants to offer the complete package deal of travel, holidaying and shopping at cheap rates. Nok Air has set apart about Rs 20 crore for promotional activities. Bird group is doing the marketing and distribution for Nok Air in India.

Nok Air, which started operations in 2004, broke even quickly and has posted a four-fold jump in net profit last year.
