Due to heavy rains in Mumbai and Maharashtra, flight operations at the domestic and international airports in Mumbai were suspended on Saturday for an hour. For one hour, there were no flight movements. Later, as the rains let up, flights resumed. Mumbai airport is the busiest airport in India.

The rains which started on Friday night continued through most of Saturday, flooding many Mumbai suburbs. The flights from Mumbai airport were suspended from around 11.45 Am to 12.45 AM.

However, since many flights were held up, airlines were operating their services with some delay, airport sources said. More rain is forecast for Mumbai for Sunday and Monday.

Rains, which threw Mumbai city and suburbs, have been the heaviest this year so far. The Monsoon arrived in Mumbai last week.

Mumbai airport, which is in a low-lying area, is a soft target for the nature's fury. Mithi river, which flows quite close to the Mumbai airport, is cause for concern for the airport authorities, since any large rise in water levels in Mithi can flood the runway. During the incessant rains of July 26, 2005, the runway was badly hit and flights had to be stopped for over a day.
