Government-owned oil companies in India have increased prices of aviation turbine fuel. Oil firms have increased ATF prices by around 2.86%. Airlines are set to hike air fares by around Rs 50 per seat.
A Jet Airways official informed Economic Times that the airline, which is India's largest private airline by marketshare, is planning to hike fares. More airlines are expected to follow suit. SpiceJet said that it will decide on the fuel surcharge hike in a few days.
The fare hike will be part of the increased fuel surcharge that airlines levy on each ticket. Oil marketing companies in India, all of them government-owned, review jet fuel prices every month. Airlines are quick to raise fuel surcharge whenever fuel prices go up.
From July 1, ATF prices in Delhi were increased to Rs 37,799.54 per kilo litre from Rs 36,746.53 per kilo litre. In Mumbai, the prices went up by Rs 1,088.56 per kilo to Rs 39,062.46 per kilo litre.
The fuel surcharge hike will be the second in a series of recent bad news on the fare front. Recently, Kingfisher decided to reimpose congestion at Air Deccan, which it acquired last month.
