Jet Airways and Lufthansa are planning to jointly launch a cargo airline, said media reports. Lufthansa may either join hands with Jet Airways to set up a brand-new airline or use Jet Airways' passenger planes to ferry cargo between India and Europe.
However, an equity participation by Lufthansa in a cargo airline venture with Jet Airways seems unlikely given the fact that Indian civil aviation rules do not encourage investment in Indian airlines by foreign partners.
Jet Airways has already announced plans to start a cargo airline and get it up and running by the ending of this year. Jet has not confirmed if it will partner Lufthansa for this ventre.
According to media reports, the Jet hub in Brussels will help the airline in case it finally ties up with Lufthansa for a cargo airline.
Lufthansa's last airline venture in India was in the early 1990s, when it tied up the Modi group to launch the domestic airline ModiLuft. However, most of the airlines in the first flush of privatisation collapsed before the turn of the century, including ModiLuft. The company later reincarnated as Royal Airways, and launched SpiceJet. SpiceJet is currently promoted by the Kansagra family, and Lufthansa has no stake in the airline. If the talks with Jet Airways go through and results in the formation of a new airline, it will be a virtual second coming for Lufthansa in India.
Earlier, Jet Airways had indicated its intention to start a cargo airline, attracted by the huge cargo traffic within India and outside. In India, the largest domestic cargo airline is BlueDart Aviation, which is a subsidiary of DHL. Several other cargo-only airlines like Flyington are waiting in the wings, even as established carriers like Air Deccan and GoAir have already announced plans to enter the cargo space.
Lufthansa's cargo division already has 19 MD-11 aircraft flying in and out of India. An earlier attempt by Lufthansa to tie up with the Hinduja group for a cargo airline did not take off.
