I have a phobia about flying. By that I don't mean I have a mild aversion to it, or need a stiff drink before I get on the plane - I mean that, unless I numb myself with industrial quantities of tranquillisers, the prospect of getting on a plane turns me into a gibbering, whimpering, panicking wreck, unable to go anywhere near an aircraft without hyperventilating.
About 15 years ago, I set out to cure my fear of flying by finding out as much as I could about how planes work. I thought that, if I could convince myself it was an irrational fear, the phobia would go away.
