Derek Davison, who has died aged 84, followed his wartime experience as a bomber pilot by successfully making the transition from airliner's flight deck to airline boardroom as chairman of Britannia Airways.
In the spring of 1979 it was clear that Britannia, of which Davison was at that time managing director, would need to replace its ageing fleet. The American aircraft manufacturer Boeing was anxious to land its first European order for the new 767 airliner, and there was intense competition from the European Airbus consortium.
