Pawan Hans Helicopters will play a crucial role in the development of
aviation and tourism in the Indian hill state of Uttaranchal. This was
stated by Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel in the
Parliament. The government-owned helicopter service Pawan Hans will
diversify operations and connect to places of tourist interest in
Uttaranchal like Ghangharia and Hemkund Sahib. Permissions for these
flights are awaited.
Uttaranchal has two airports at Dehradun and Pantanagar. Dehradun
airport, owned by the Airports Authority of India is under renovation,
which will help Boeing 737/Airbus A320 planes to operate from here.
Airlines have requested that Pantanagar airport aso be upgraded for
operation of ATR-42 planes. Pantanagar airport is also under
development.
Earlier, the state government of Uttaranchal had asked the AAI to
study the feasibility of developing airports at Pithoragarh and
Guachar. However, these locations were found unsuitable for airports
due to the surrounding terrain.
