PRESS RELEASE
May 4, 2006
SpiceJet's sixth Boeing 737-800 winglet, new generation aircraft
arrived today from Seattle, US. With the induction of this new Boeing
737-800 aircraft in its fleet, SpiceJet has increased its passenger
seat capacity from 7500 seats to over 9000 seats a day, leading to an
effective increase in daily flights from 36 to 49 flights a day. The
aircraft will be operational from May 10th 2006 onwards.
With the sixth aircraft in place, SpiceJet now offers a new flight
between Mumbai and Hyderabad, and in addition, Mumbai also gets second
flight to Chennai.
SpiceJet is also introducing additional flights on the following
existing sectors:
- Delhi - Hyderabad - Chennai
- Delhi - Jammu - Srinagar
Maintaining that the induction of the new 737-800s is "a key element
in offering comfortable and reliable service to our customers",
SpiceJet Director Mr. Ajay Singh said that, "The aircraft will provide
cost-saving performance that supports the airline's low-cost
structure."
He further added, "SpiceJet is positioned as a low-fare, no-frills
airline that aims to make air travel accessible to everyone. SpiceJet
is not just about low fares but with new generation Boeing 737-800
aircraft, cutting edge technology and professional management, it
continues to promise to deliver comfortable and consistent on-time
performance."
With blended winglets aircraft, SpiceJet will save over 75,000 gallons
fuel per annum per aircraft. The payback period, on fuel savings
alone, is projected to be less than three years at current fuel
prices. Additional Blended Winglet benefits include; higher payload
capabilities - in the order of 900 to 2,200 kg - from domestic
airports, reduced noise and environmental pollutants and a distinctly
high-tech image.
SpiceJet intends to add five more aircrafts by end of 2006 and about
20 aircrafts in next three years. With new aircraft, and highest load
factor in the industry, SpiceJet also intends to increase its
passenger market share from existing 6% to 10% by the end of financial
year 2006.
The new aircraft is named after the most aromatic of the spices,
"Cinnamon". In ancient Rome, since most meals were prepared in a
single cauldron, casseroles containing both meat and fruit were common
and cinnamon helped
bridge the flavours. In SpiceJet we believe that our sixth 737-800
aircraft named "Cinnamon" will help bridge and strengthen existing
SpiceJet sectors. The other aircrafts include Chili, Turmeric,
Coriander, Saffron and Ginger.
SpiceJet operates low-cost flights to 11 destinations of Delhi,
Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Goa, Pune, Bangalore, Kolkata, Jammu, Srinagar,
Chennai & Hyderabad utilizing modern B737-800 new generation aircraft
with an all economy configuration of 189 seats.
