SpiceJet made the first big order for Boeing planes at the Asian
Aerospace Show currently on at Singapore's Changi Exhibition Center.
The Indian low-cost carrier made the order (exercising an option) for
ten Boeing 737-900ER at a list price of $70 million apiece. There is
also an option to buy ten more.
The Boeing 737-900ER is designed to carry more passengers and fly
longer than current models of the single-aisle aircraft.
The 210-seater Boeings may be deployed in Delhi-Mumbai or
Delhi-Bangalore routes. The low-cost airline SpiceJet started its
operations last year.
“We are absolutely delighted to be placing a new order with Boeing and
we think that this new order reflects the rapid growth in the Indian
aviation market,” Ajay Singh, director of Spicejet was quoted as
saying in Business Standard. Boeing officials said that they expect
the order to help SpiceJet boost passenger traffic.
Boeing is promoting the 450-seat 747-8 and its wide-body sibling, the
777, which is pitted against Airbus' A340. Boeing bagged 154 orders
for the 777s in 2005, while the A340 attracted only 15 firm orders.
