Kerala government will set up the Kannur Airport with private
participation, Chief Minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy said. Conditions
of the contract will be decided later.
Procedural formalities for the airport are almost through and the
central government has given clearance to the project, he said. The
acquisition of land will be commenced soon after the final approval of
the Union government.
The chief Minister expressed his ignorance about the Leela group's
effort to set up the Kannur airport.
The state government will continue its efforts to start its
prestigious project Air Kerala, he said. Rules and regulations become
a hindrance to the project while it is compared with profit-motivated
private airlines, he added.
Kerala has sought a waiver of the 5-year domestic flight experience
condition to fly overseas. Fifteen seats with 25% concession will be
reserved in each service, Mr Chandy added. He said that Air Kerala
should get the same concession which was given to Air India Express.
