Coimbatore airport is expected to witness a fast development, with the
Airport Authority Of India (AAI) planning to expand the existing
terminal building at the airport, besides constructing a new terminal
complex.
AAI has plans to make provisions for an arrival lounge on the terminal
building's southern side and the entire passenger terminal space will
be converted into a departure lounge.
The expansion of the existing terminal building is expected to take an
year for completion. AAI Coimbatore has already acquired 50 acres, and
it needs another 40 acres for the proposed terminal complex. It also
requires 80 acres for runway expansion.
The airport is now witnessing a boom in passenger traffic and flight
services. Silk Air and Kingfisher Airlines are expected to start
operations from here. Air India is also going to introduce a flight to
Coimbatore. Air India had already approached the AAI to introduce the
Airbus 310 aircraft on the Coimbatore sector, possibly to link it with
an international destination.
