As Delhi and Mumbai airports get ready for a revamp exercise at last,
the UPA government at the centre is going on with huge plans for the
upgradation work of Chennai and Kolkata airports on a similar
public-private joint venture model.
Media reports say that the government will invite bids for the
airports within the next 10 days. Without taking into account protest
from agitated airport employees, financial bids for the Delhi and
Mumbai airport modernisation joint ventures will were expected to be
open Sunday. The revamp partners for Delhi and Mumbai airports would
be finalised on January 31.
After that, bids for the development of Chennai and Kolkata airports
would be invited from private parties. It may start within ten days
from this process.
Media reports suggest that the development work will be done in a
similar fashion as in the Delhi and Mumbai airports with the private
sector as the majority shareholder.
As per the current rules, a private consortium can claim up to 74%
stake in a JV company with the FDI portion being restricted to 49% and
the rest will be owned by the AAI.
