Aircraft landing at and taking off from the Thiruvananthapuram
international airport are facing the grave danger of bird hits.
Dumping of garbage around the airport from nearby areas has attracted
many unwelcome avian visitors to the sensitive area.

| The Thiruvananthapuram-Dubai air
service will boost the economy of Kerala, says Emirates
vice-president Salim Ubaidulla. Emirates will operate eight
services weekly in this sector. Connecting the middle-east cities
with Thiruvananthapuram will be an advantage to the flourishing
tourism and information technology sectors in the capital city of
Kerala, observe industrialists and businessmen. Technopark in
Thiruvananthapuram will get major advantages due to these new
flights, according to IT expert and chairman of IBS VK Mathews. |
At present, airport personnel burst crackers regularly when flights
land and take off from the airport to scare away the birds. With
international, domestic and Air Force flights operating from the
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, the bird menace has become a
major headache to the authorities.
The environmental committee of the Thiruvananthapuram International
Airport has taken up the issue seriously. The committee, which
recently met under the chairmanship of district collector N Ayyappan
has decided to make the airport premises free of birds. A long-term
action plan will be implemented to stop dumping of garbage by local
residents, hotels and restaurants.
Waste from illegal slaughterhouses around the airport premises adds to
the problem. The corporation has been asked to take action against
illegal slaughter houses that function near the airport premises. The
district collector has urged the public to co-operate to keep the
airport premises clean. Awareness campaigns for the public will be
organised.
