AIRPORT LICENCE

Govt makes licensing compulsory for airports

Most AAI airports meet ICAO norms

BY A CORRESPONDENT
March 18, 2006

Praful Patel, Minister for Civil Aviation has told the Parliament that it will be mandatory for all airports in India to procure a license. Most of the 97 airports owned by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) meet the standards set up by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Additionally, steps are being taken to improve standards for those that fall short, primarily due to non-availability of land adjoining the airport boundary, uncontrolled development around the airport and rapid growth of air traffic that creates crowd at terminal building and car park area of various airports.

Of the 454 total airports and airstrips in the country, state Governments own 158 airports, and the Ministry of Defence own 138. 61 airports/airstrips are privately owned.
