Low-cost airline Spicejet and general insurance company Tata AIG general Insurance have joined hands to provide domestic travel insurance for travellers booking tickets on Spicejet flights. The facility is currently open only to those who book Spicejet tickets through the website www.spicejet.com. It is not available to those who are buying tickets through the call centre or through sales agents.
Named “Domestic TravInsure”, the Tata AIG-Spicejet domestic travel insurance covers not just travel insurance. Most insurance companies which offer travel insurance limit the liability to accidents and related claims. The Spicejet travel insurance covers most of the possible exigencies likely from the time of booking a flight. Low-cost airlines in India like Spicejet do not make refunds in case flights are cancelled. They limit their liability to offering another ticket on another flight. However, the Tata AIG Domestic TravInsure covers claims on accidental Death and Dismemberment, Emergency Accidental Medical Reimbursement, Emergency Medical Evacuation and repatriation of the remains, 24 Hours Emergency assistance service, Trip Cancellation, Baggage Loss, Flight Delays and trip Interruption.
The travel insurance policy will be valid for 30 days from the time of booking the flight ticket on Spicejet website. The insurance premium for Domestic TravInsure is fixed at Rs 129 per ticket.
The “Domestic TravInsure” policy from Tata AIG for Spicejet travellers is expected to help reduce the problems faced by the sudden cancellation of tickets due to a death in the family, sudden illness or a co passenger falling sick. Spicejet claimed on the first day of unveiling the offer, 1000 policies were sold. A Spicejet official described the response as overwhelming. On an average, about 12,000 passengers book flight tickets on Spicejet every day.
For accidental death, Tata AIG will give cover for Rs 7.5 lakh, while for emergency medical treatment, the insurance will be Rs 1 lakh. For baggage loss, insurance will be of Rs 7,500 and for flight delay the passenger will be paid Rs 1,500 per six hours upto a maximum of Rs 10,500.
According to AIG's President for South Asia Charles Bouloux, the booking and insurance can be easily done through the Spicejet website due to a seamless host-to-host integration of AIG and Spicejet. AIG already offers such flight insurance policies to travellers buying tickets on Air Asia of Malaysia, Pacific Airlines, Tiger Airways, Jet Star, Virgin Atlantic, and British Airways.
Booming air travel in India has brought with it a host of attendant problems. Airports are straining to handle the increased passenger traffic and aircraft. During peak hours, aircraft landing in metros like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai are forced to circle over the aircraft for as much as half an hour before they get permission to land. The last couple of years have seen a mushrooming of airlines, including Spicejet, Air Deccan, Paramount, Kingfisher, GoAir and Indigo. Most of the airlines are running up huge losses to keep flying and looking to raise resources. Many airlines are attempting differentiation to carve out a niche. With the travel insurance from Tata AIG, Spicejet has become the first Indian airline to offer such a product to its travellers.
