Air India is leasing six Canadian Regional Jets to join its fleet. The first of these six aircraft will join the merged Air India - Indian fleet by August. Air India will use the CRJs for its short-haul domestic routes.
Air India is in the process of identifying short domestic routes to ply these aircraft, said Vishwapati Tripathi, joint managing director of Air India. The Air India CRJs will offer basic meal services, and the 70-seater aircraft will have an all-economy configuration.
Air India is in the process of merging Indian to itself. The new carrier will go under the brand name Air India from the middle of next month. Air India is now in the process of rationalising and synergising its operations with Indian.
Air India hopes to make savings of Rs 190 crore through its merger and route synergisation with Indian. The merged airline has over 170 aircraft on order and is the largest airline in India. Air India has already been asked by the Union civil aviation ministry to draw up a long-term perspective for its operations.
