Kingfisher Airlines has ordered a total of 50 new Airbus aircraft the ongoing Paris Air Show at the Le Bourget airport a list price of $7 billion.
The aircraft purchase order includes:
15 Airbus A350-800 XWBs
10 Airbus A330- 200s
5 long-range Airbus A340-500s
20 Airbus A320 series
The announcement was made by Vijay Mallya, Kingfisher chairman, at a joint press conference by Kingfisher and Airbus. Kingfisher Airlines is the only Indian airline so far which has ordered the superjumbo Airbus SAS A380.
Kingfisher Airlines is keen on larger, twin-aisle planes and intends to use them to ply overseas routes. Interestingly, Kingfisher Airlines does not have rights to fly overseas so far. But the airline hopes that the new civil aviation policy - Vision 2020 - in the works will allow more private airlines to fly abroad. By the time clarity emerges on the policy front, Kingfisher hopes to have the bigger aircraft ready.
Airbus last year redesigned the A350 to improve falling sales, and named its new version as the Xtra Wide Body or A350-800 XWB.
The Paris Air Show has seen a flurry of orders coming in for the Airbus family. With the Kingfisher aircraft order, the total aircraft order book for Airbus so far during the Air Show is around $60 billion. The rising number orders for Airbus aircraft seen as a revival of confidence in Airbus, which has been bogged with a two-year delay in the delivery of Airbus A380.
The A380 has been delayed primarily due to a faulty wiring design and airlines across the world are waiting for the aircraft. The company has implementted management reshuffles and cost cuts to ensure the delivery of the A380 as per revised time schedule.
