Deccan Aviation has received has received a three-year contract from the Amarnath shrine in the state of Jammu and Kashmir for providing helicopter services for the pilgrims. Deccan said in a press release that its helicopter service to the Holy Cave is available from Srinagar and Baltal.

The Amarnath Yatra chopper contract has been awarded by the shrine of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB). The Yatra is organised every year by the Jammu-Kashmir government during July and August. Deccan's copter services for this year's Amarnath Yatra have already begun.

The Amarnath trekking trail takes 6-8 days to complete. In contrast, a chartered helicopter can take you there in a couple of hours.

Amarnath is located 141 Kms from Srinagar, perched on a narrow gorge at the farther end of Lidder valley. The trekking route to Amarnath though extremely beautiful and captivating can be rather risky involving steep mountain routes, snow ridges and fast flowing streams. Lakhs of pilgrims visit the Amarnath cave every year.

The flying time from Srinagar to Baltal is around 45 minutes and from Baltal to the Holy Cave around 8 – 10 minutes. Baltal is located on the picturesque NH1A (Srinagar – Leh National Highway).

Capt G.R Gopinath, Executive Chairman Deccan Aviation said, “We Indians are spiritual and religious people. Pilgrimages like the Amarnath Yatra are sacred and important once in a life time experiences for the religious minded. For the majority of Indians, religion permeates every aspect of life, from common-place daily chores to education and lifestyle. We fulfill these dreams and aspirations with our helicopter services. Every year there are more people traveling to temples and shrines for holy visits. More than 1.25 lac devotees visited the Amarnath Shrine last year which indicates the growing number of religious travelers in India.”

Deccan Aviation has deployed 3 modern Bell 4-7 helicopters for the services. While two will be stationed at Baltal, the third will be deployed at Srinagar. The Bell 407 can carry 4 – 5 passengers.

Daily Flight Schedule

Flights start at 6.30 AM and continue through the day subject to weather conditions. Deccan Aviation has already carried 961 passengers on the Baltal – Amarnath – Baltal sector between 21 and 24 June 2007.

SASB has permitted 50% of the seats to be made available for advance booking. Deccan Aviation has appointed two agents – one in Delhi (Vaishno Devi Helicopter Ticketing) and the other in Srinagar (Shiraz Travels) where tickets can be purchased.
