Low-cost airline Spicejet hopes to break even this fiscal. Spicejet is planning to add eight more aircraft to existing fleet of Boeings. The airline now commands a market share of 7.5%, said Spicejet managing director Ajay Singh.
Spicejet is focussing on controlled growth rather than unbridled expansion. It hopes the strategy will help it break even in the first quarter of this fiscal.
Low-cost airline market leader in India Air Deccan has been furiously adding new locations besides going in for cut-throat pricing. Air Deccan has of late found it difficult to stem the losses despite being the largest discount airline in India.
Spicejet said that it will be flying three million passengers this year and hopes to increase it to six million passengers next year.
Spicejet officials said that the airline plans to buy Boeing 900 extended range aircraft for flights up to five hours.
According to Spicejet CEO Sidhanta Sharma, the airline has no plans to dilute equity further. In January, Air Deccan had divested about 10% stake to the Tata group for about Rs 287 crore. Spicejet hopes that revenues will improve once the yields harden.
As part of celebrations on its second anniversary, Spicejet is offering 99 paisa tickets on all its 14 non-stop routes till June 6. The 99-paisa Spicejet ticket will be available online at Spicejet's website www.spicejet.com. The two lakh tickets on offer will be available for two or more passengers flying together.
Spicejet recently tied up with Tata AIG General Insurance to offer travel insurance for those taking Spicejet flights. The passenger can opt for the insurance while booking the tickets on Spicejet website. The premium for the Domestic TravInsure policy is Rs 129.
Spicejet began operations in April 2005. It is the new avatar of Royal Airways, which itself is the reincarnation of ModiLuft. ModiLuft was a joint venture of Modis and Lufthansa, which shut down when the German partner exited. The baton has been handed down several times, and now the airline is promoted by the Kansagra family of NRIs.
