General Electric is in talks with GVK Industries besides L&T and Gammon India to set up and modernise airports in India, a news report said. General Electric is already in talks with Maharashtra's MADC and MIDC (Maharashtra Airports Development Corporation and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation for airport development.
GVK Industries is already developing Mumbai's international airport. GVK won the rights to develop the airport last year. The airport development is done with South African Airports and Bidvest.
India is planning to develop about 35 metro and non-metro airports at an estimated cost of Rs 49,200 crore. The aviation boom has led to congested air traffic and airports in India.
L&T officials have confirmed the talks with GE. L&T already has a 17% stake in the upcoming Bangalore International Airport Ltd. L&T is also into airport-related construction work New Delhi and Hyderabad airports.
However, GVK could be of interest to GE since the company is already running Mumbai and Hyderabad airports and plan to bid for more airport development contracts when they open up for bidding.
