GMR Infrastructure has acquired 100% of the paid up equity capital of GMR Aviation. With this GMR Aviation has become a 100% subsidiary of GMR Infrastructure.
GMR Infrastructure, in association with Fraport and Malaysian Airport, is developing the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, GMR is also modernising the Hyderabad international airport. The GMR-Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) has won the bid to host the prestigious Intra-Regional Route Development Forum – 2009 conference. The company won the mandate to organise the event in Hyderabad for the year 2009.
‘Routes’ is an annual congregation of airlines and airports across the globe, which are joined by other interested or associated parties such as tourism, business and economic development boards and authorities.
In this annual meeting, they deliberate on how best to enhance air services and meet the growing needs of local business, industry, tourism, research organisations, and other sectors. The scale of Routes is unique, which represents over 100 airline companies and 150 airports from all over the world.
So far, Routes has been held in 11 cities across the globe. Last year’s event was hosted in Dubai International Exhibition and Convention Centre, while 2007 and 2008 events will be hosted by Stockholm City Conference Centre and Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, respectively.
GHIAL has been taking part in `Routes' conferences since 2004 and proactively marketing the new international airport in Shamshabad. It, however, felt that it would market the airport and the Pearl City of Hyderabad to the global airline companies more effectively by hosting the event, rather than participating in it elsewhere.
The company will manage the entire event on its own by taking care of various aspects such as planning, conference venue, hotel accommodation for over 500 delegates, logistics, and PR and promotion, besides safety and security issues.
The company fervently hopes that hosting the Forum meet here would enable it to effectively market the city of Hyderabad to the global airliners that would in turn help it achieve its ultimate goal of making Hyderabad a transit hub for global air travellers in the years to come.
Mr. T Srinagesh, COO, GHIAL, said “Hosting a gathering of over 100 world airline companies and over 150 airports located across the Asia provides the best of opportunity to market not only the up-and-coming airport but also Hyderabad as destination amongst the top decision makers in the aviation sector, by showcasing the huge potential Andhra Pradesh enjoys in the areas of business, trade, IT, Biotech, agriculture, food-processing, and tourism.”
“This way we wish to play our due role in boosting the economic development of Andhra Pradesh in general, and Hyderabad in particular, since we, as the developers of the new international airport in Shamshabad, are best placed to understand and communicate the potential of our catchment areas in the State to Asia and the World,” he said.
