GMR Infrastructure, which operates and majority-owns Hyderabad's upcoming GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd, (GHIAL) has awarded ground handling operations to two consortia. The new Hyderabad airport, to be named Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad is being developed by GMR Infrastructure. GMR also won last year's bid to develop the Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The ground handling activities of third party airlines will be carried out at GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd by two consortia: one, Menzies & Bobba and two, SATS, Indian Airlines & Air India. The contract is a seven-year concession for the consortia, and will be valid from the date of operation of the airport. The two consortia have been awarded the contracts to keep the rates and services competitive.
Menzies Aviation of Menzies-Bobba consortium offers ground handling and cargo handling services at over 100 locations across the world. It also has joint ventures in the Asia-Pacific for ground handling. Almost 500 airlines are customers of Menzies Aviation. The Indian Partner for Menzies Aviation is the Bobba Aviation Group, which carries out cargo and ground handling in India. Bobba Aviation Group will complement the services of the joint venture with their local expertise.
A subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, SATS is the leading provider of integrated ground handling and in-flight catering services at Singapore's Changi International Airport. SATS also has 16 JVs in 9 Asian countries for Cargo / Ground handling and In-Flight Catering and serves over 100 airline customers. The Indian Partners, Air India and Indian Airlines are national carriers and major third party ground handling operators in India.
Both the consortia are expected to put in efforts to offer cost effective, high quality, safe and efficient ground handling services at international level at the Airport. They will be setting up Modern IT systems and ground handling equipments in a mobile environment for the first time in India to increase operational efficiencies and reduce turn around time for the aircraft. They would thus be playing a vital role for the airlines for increased utilization time per aircraft.
