Cochin International Airport Ltd has completed the construction of a taxiway parallel to the existing runway. The taxiway will be handed over for commercial operations soon, said S Sarma, who is chairman of the sub-committee at Cochin International Airport Ltd.

The full length of the taxiway now available at CIAL now is 3400 meters. The construction of the CIAL taxiway cost about Rs 12.50 crore. It was built over a period of seven months. The taxiway extension was done for 2607 metres. The width of the carriage is 23 metres and that of the shoulders is 10.5 mts.

The construction of the taxiway was carried out by Techni Bharati Limited. With the new taxiway starting operations, aircraft can quickly take off and land without using the runway for too long. According to CIAL authorities, this means less congestion and easier traffic control.

With the increasing traffic at the Kochi airport, the Airports Authority of India and the operating airlines have been requesting the CIAL authorities to lengthen the taxiway.

Meanwhile, an Express Travel World report said that CIAL is planning to set up a subsidiary called Cochin International Project Consultancy Services to develop low-cost airports. CIAL itself being a unique concept - it is the first private airport in India - it has received invitations from other state governments to set up low-cost airports. CIAL itself was set up a meagre cost of Rs 300 crore. Sri Lanka and Angola have invited CIAL to replicate the model of low-cost airport in their countries. The CIAL board decided to set up the low-cost airport subsidiary, encouraged by these signals.
